Start with the intended use
A daily academy uniform, a travel gi and a branded retail collection can require different choices. Describe who will wear the gi, how often it will be washed and whether a particular competition rulebook matters. Confirm the event requirements separately before approving the garment.
Separate fabric weight from finished weight
GSM describes fabric mass per square metre. It does not describe the weight of a complete gi, and it does not by itself establish durability or quality. Jacket size, weave, trousers, collar construction and reinforcement all affect the finished garment. Compare samples in the same size before choosing.
Specify the jacket and trousers separately
Record the jacket weave and agreed GSM, then the trouser fabric, weight, knee reinforcement and waistband. A shorthand such as “lightweight gi” leaves too much open to interpretation. If you send a reference garment, mark which details should be retained and which should change.
Approve performance with a sample
Inspect seam finishing, reinforcement placement, collar feel and movement when worn. Measure the sample before and after washing according to its proposed care instructions. Agree acceptable dimensional changes and measurement tolerances in writing; a fabric label alone cannot promise a shrinkage percentage.
Put it in writing
| Decision | Record in your brief |
|---|---|
| Jacket | Weave, fabric composition, weight and colour |
| Trousers | Fabric, weight, knee reinforcement and drawcord |
| Construction | Collar, seam finish and reinforcement locations |
| Branding | Placement, dimensions and decoration method |
